How long have you been doing what you are doing and how did you get to be the Magazine Mentor?
Back in 1995, after having 2 of my 3 children, I realized a need for a local family publication in my area. I was a mom – looking for things to do with my kids in my suburb of Los Angeles. There were the big family publications which had a calendar for all of Los Angeles, but nothing locally. I wanted a local storytime or activity that day and couldn’t find anything that listed the local things to do.
In that defining moment, my frustration led me to the idea of creating a vehicle to connect parents with the resources they need. Within 3 months, I had created a newsletter to serve parents in my community and make money. It included listings of things to do, a calendar of events and activities, articles from local professionals and advertisements. I monetized the newsletter with advertisers and broke even on the first issue – only to go up from there.
What began as a 4 page copied newsletter with a circulation of 1000 is now a 32 page glossy full color magazine with a circulation of 20,000. What’s Up For Kids, LLC also produces up to 6 family expos in Southern California and boasts two websites – www.WhatsUpForKids.com and www.GotSummerCamp.com – and best of all, it’s a six figure business that fits into my life! And, I've recently launched a new national magazine -Today's Innovative Woman!

How is your business model different then others?
I have always had the entrepreneurial spirit. Prior to having children, I was involved with selling others products with a few different multi-level marketing programs. Even after having my first child, I became a “consultant” for a company selling children’s products. But it was never fulfilling enough – not enough satisfaction and not enough money! Plus I had the desire to have my own company and build MY dream, not someone elses! And after having children, the flexibility to set my own hours and work from home was even more important.
This business model allows you to create your own company around something you are passionate about. Your passion can be turned into a niche market you can serve! You aren’t selling someone else’s product – you are selling your own! Yes, you are making sales calls and networking – but it is easier to make those connections because you know whole-heartedly that what you are offering is something they need.
Why a niche ezine, newsletter or magazine?
Making the newsletter, magazine or ezine a niche publication is what will set you apart and contribute to your success. There is a huge number of general magazines serving a wide target market. By narrowing your target market and defining a niche, you will be able to provide distinctive editorial content and advertising opportunities to those trying to reach that narrow market.
